For eyeshadow, gently wiggle the brush in the product to pick up color without packing it on. Then, use a pressing motion to smudge the product along your lash line, upper or lower, depending on your desired effect.    

You can also use short, back-and-forth strokes to gently diffuse harsh lines. For a softer effect, buff out the product with the sides of the brush.
